Captain’s Log, February 21st, 2016
The annual
Bonnie and Clyde tournament
was a great success once again. 32 teams paid in $30 each and the SDAPA added $640. 12 teams placed in the money on February 13
th
at the Locker Room Sports Café’. Dan Lewis and Meg Morris played a pretty flawless final and beat Clint Palaci and Carolina Weathers in the final match to win the 2016 Bonnie and Clyde Valentine’s Day Massacre. Dan and Meg won $480 and Clint and Carolina won $240. Other teams to place in the event were a tie for 3
rd
place between Mary Anne Flanagan/David Sadis and Jeannett Turner/Joel Montes ($160 each team), 5
th
place finishers Melissa Montoya/Luis Cortez, Diane Dodge/David Ferris, Bergandi Waldrop/Sam Word and Charity Harang/Eddie Topik ($80 each team) and 9
th
place finishers Larissa Leroux/Kevin Petties, Janette Lizarraga/Ed Arciniega Jr., Shauna Hawk/Jeff Hawk and Alison Heffernan/Jeff Stoneking ($60 each team). The total prize payout was $1600.00. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to everyone that participated!
We currently have 50 teams signed up for the
Southwest Challenge
3 person tournament in Las Vegas and another 20 teams competing in the 9 Ball Scotch Doubles event from the San Diego area. That’s some fantastic representation for this event once again.
The Westgate Resort
just finished up a lot of the construction for the convention area, some of the restaurant area and the Sports Book. The place is looking really upscale at pretty reasonable pricing for rooms. So far, we are extremely happy with the move from the Riviera, and we are very excited about our March event with the added tournament. To give some of you an idea of how the events will unfold, as some of you are playing in both events, we will start the 3 person event at 9am on Friday morning after the player meeting. After that first round, we will then conduct a player meeting for the Doubles event and start that first round. We will then alternate back and forth on Friday, Saturday and into Sunday to finish both events. It’s possible we can finish on Saturday night, but it’s even more likely that we finish on Sunday. The nice thing about alternating is that teams will get a bit of a break between matches if they are only playing in one event. There are usually nice breaks already built into Friday since there are so many teams, but Saturday has been a tough day playing straight through to the end. We will have 64 pool tables set up for this tournament, which should allow for more mini tournaments on Saturday. With St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday night of our SWC and March Madness all weekend long, it should be a pretty fun weekend for everyone participating. See our web site for rules for both events.
The
Spring Single’s Regionals
take place at the
Locker Room Sports Café
on March 5-6. 8 ball qualifiers play on Saturday and 9 ball qualifiers play on Sunday. If you have never participated in a Regional event, these are typically all day events, so be prepared to be there for several hours. We play a single modified format where there is a one loss bracket for the first few rounds, but then at some point players on the one loss side move back to the winner’s side and there is a point where when you lose on the winner’s side, you are out. This format basically allows everyone to play at least twice to determine a winner. We will be qualifying six players for
Nationals
from 8 ball and five players from 9 Ball, with at least one winner in every skill level tier group. Qualified participants should be receiving a packet from APA in the mail that provides times, dates, location, participants and a certification form. If you do not receive your packet, please call the league office for information regarding the event. There are players coming from all over Southern California to compete in this event. We wish all of the San Diego participants the best of luck! The next Regional qualifier in October will take place out of town. It might only be in Riverside, Orange County or San Bernardino County, but just giving a heads up for those of you getting ready to play on Singles boards. This isn’t to discourage you from participating, but rather just giving you notice that it will be out of town.
The 2016
SDAPA City Championships
has a completely new schedule this year. The event will take place at the Locker Room Sports Café. The dates for 9 Ball City Championships are June 5-6 for first and second rounds only. 8 Ball City Championships are June 10-12 for the first and second rounds, with some matches taking place Friday night. Ladies City Championships are Friday June 17
th
for first round matches. SEMIFINALS AND FINALS FOR ALL 3 FORMATS are Saturday, June 18
th
. Championship Saturday will qualify 11 teams for the 2016 APA World Championships. Mark your calendars and save the dates!
