Captain’s Log, October 4th, 2015

The Summer Session Blast is next weekend. Schedules and rosters have been posted on the web site for all of the teams competing. Scheduled rounds at the Locker Room Sports Café’ are 9am, 1:15pm and 5:30 pm on Saturday, October 10th and 9:30am and 1pm on Sunday October 11th. We will be conducting the Blast tournament all weekend, and this event is where you can collect your team’s awards for the Summer Session. We will have Perfect Session trophies, MVP trophies, patches for 8 Ball and 9 Ball Breaks and Break and Runs and end of session trophies for Division Champions and Playoff Champions. We will also have MVP trophies available from previous sessions, although we no longer provide MVP’s that are more than 1 year old. You can send someone from your team to pick up all of your team’s patches. To help save time, it’s a good idea to have a list of all of your team members you are collecting patches for. A list of players that earned patches can be found on the website by selecting the awards and milestones tab.

The Locker Room Sports Café’ now offers beer and wine, so the beverage choices will be numerous. The Locker Room also provides food options, so like all other tournament venues, no outside food or beverages will be allowed. Dave Whitsell will be there for any cue repair or supply needs during the tournament. We hope to see you at the tournament. This will be the only opportunity to pick up patches and MVP trophies until our next Blast tournament, scheduled for the weekend of January 30-31.

The SDAPA League Office has made the decision to cancel the Halloween 9 Ball Ghoul Tournament that was scheduled for Saturday, October 31st. We ended up with a schedule conflict for that day, so enjoy your Halloween parties on that Saturday night and we will look at alternate dates for our annual 9 Ball tournament.

The first ever APA 9 Ball Southwest Challenge at the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas is coming up October 15-18. San Diego has 25 teams and there is almost a full field for this event. We will be sending out certification forms and rules and tournament information to each participating team in next week’s team packets, so keep an eye out for those. DO NOT SEND THESE BACK TO THE LEAGUE OFFICE. Take them with you to register your team at the tournament. Thursday, October 15th is the check in day and rooms are already paid for and will be ready for each team. You can check into your room at 3pm. Team registration begins at 6pm in the tournament room, which will be at the farthest end of the exhibition rooms from the hotel. Basically, the tournament room will be on the Southwest end of the building, as it should be J Enjoy your trip and we will see you there!

Congratulations to last session’s Perfect Session winners:
8 Ball- KC Stephens, Johnny Torres, Ande Cogsdill, Jen Hara, Christoforos Savvides, Anthony Truncale, Raymond Todd, Greg Cabaniss and Kerri Tobey

9 Ball- Mel Roach, Jessica Garcia and David Ferris

When keeping score in 8 Ball or 9 Ball, make sure you mark all defensive shots and innings. A defensive shot (also known as a safety or a non performance shot) is defined as no intent to make a ball. It doesn’t matter whether the shooter is hooked or has no decent shot. Ask yourself if they hit the ball hard enough to make it somewhere. If they only hit it hard enough to touch a rail, then it’s a defensive shot. If they don’t wish to make use of their turn at the table and just pick up and hand you the cue ball, that’s a defensive shot. You can also ask the shooter if you are unsure. Innings and defensive shots don’t have to match on your score sheet, and you should never let the other team coax you into marking more innings than you believe happened. Innings are only to be marked when the loser of the lag misses a shot or ends his turn at the table. Making the 8 Ball is not ending a turn, unless the cue ball scratches or the 8 Ball goes in the wrong pocket. Innings should carry over into the next game if it is still that player’s turn at the table. At the end of a match you also do not mark an inning if the player still would have had their turn if there was another game to be played. Innings only get marked for misses or default game losses, and only for the loser of the lag. Accurate scorekeeping is an absolute must with a handicapped pool league. It’s what helps us more accurately rate each league member.

Shoot Pool Good!
