Captain’s Log, February 15th, 2015

Over the last few weeks, we have been closely monitoring the USPS new delivery process, and the bottom line is that it just isn’t going to work for us anymore. We are experiencing score sheets not getting to the team captain before league play, and we are experiencing properly postmarked score sheets not getting back to us in time before the next mailing is scheduled to go out. The bottom line is that there just isn’t going to be next day service anymore, and because of that, we are forced to make the transition to electronic score sheets and payments sooner rather than later. It will be a few more weeks before we are ready to do electronic payments, but you are able to print score sheets off of our web site now if the score sheet doesn’t get to you in time.

What we are doing in the office to relieve a little bit of the stress on your end is updating the web site a second time before your team plays your regularly scheduled match. Using Tuesday night league as an example, we have to mail Tuesday team score sheets on Friday if there is going to be any hope of them getting to the team captain in time for your match. To mail on Friday means you absolutely had to postmark your score sheet on Wednesday (before USPS closes) and MAYBE we get it in time on Friday. If we don’t get it by Friday, we mark the team as past due since we can’t mark the team as paid if we haven’t received payment. That doesn’t mean we won’t give you the bonus points. It’s mainly our way of keeping track of what is here and what isn’t. When the office opens on Monday and the remainder of the Tuesday sheets arrive, if they are postmarked properly, we update that the team is no longer past due and award the bonus points, assuming your team is not carrying a past due. We will also update the web site a second time to reflect the standings for sheets that were mailed on time but arrived late. Also, just because your team’s points might show as up to date doesn’t necessarily mean we have received your score sheet with no money. There is a good possibility that we received the other team’s score sheet and not yours, and that’s what we used to score the match.

We have approximately 45 teams that will be representing San Diego at the 2015 APA 8 Ball Southwest Challenge in Las Vegas next month. This pre-registered event isn’t quite full, and we can still take on a few more teams, but you absolutely need to hurry.

We have slots for the APA 8 Ball and 9 Ball Scotch Doubles tournament at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas in April. We will be conducting a blind draw for these slots to the teams signed up for these events. Details for each event are:

The APA 8-Ball Doubles Championship8 Ball Doubles- April 28-May 1. Entry fee is $100. Handicap limit per team is 10, consisting of any gender combinations. Each participant must have a minimum of 20 scores within the last 2 years in the 8 Ball format and be active paid members on an APA 8 Ball team. This tournament is alternating shot using handicap races and is a single modified elimination tournament, which means you are guaranteed to play at least twice. The maximum field for this event is 384 teams and San Diego APA has 2 slots for this event.

The APA 9-Ball Doubles Championship9 Ball Doubles-May 1-3. Entry fee is $100. Handicap limit per team is 10, consisting of any gender combinations. Each participant must have a minimum of 20 scores within the last 2 years in the 9 Ball format and be active paid members on an APA 9 Ball team. This tournament is alternating shot using handicap races and is a single modified elimination tournament, which means you are guaranteed to play at least twice. The maximum field for this event is 256 teams and San Diego APA has 1 slot for this event.

The draw for these Scotch Doubles slots will be conducted on February 21st at noon. To sign up, we need both names of your team members. You may sign up for both events, but you are only eligible to compete in one of the events. In the event you are drawn for both, you get to choose which one you want. We will draw for alternates in both formats in case a team is drawn for both or decides to give up their spot. APA has more information regarding these events at www.poolplayers.com on their tournament page. These events are held in conjunction with the APA Singles Championships. First place in the 8 Ball event last year was $5000 and in 9 Ball it was $3500. That’s the kind of information you can find on APA’s National web site. Good luck and…
