Captain’s Log, October 12th, 2014

If you like playing pool, tournament season is upon us. Already past us by the time league play starts up Sunday are the US Amateur Regionals, the APA Singles Regionals and the 8 and 9 Ball Blast tournaments. Next up is the APA Southwest Challenge tournament in Las Vegas this coming weekend and then we have the annual Halloween 9 Ball Tournament on November 1st at the Hungry Stick. And then there will be a few weekends of Singles Board qualifiers taking place to get players qualified for the Spring Regional, the first step to qualifying for the APA National Singles Championships. Check our APA web site message board for dates, times and locations for the Singles Board qualifiers.

The U.S. Amateur ChampionshipCongratulations to Paul Langley for qualifying for the US Amateur Nationals in Tampa, Florida. Congratulations to SDAPA members Pete Gonzalez, John Pasquarella, Rolando Roxas and George Argerake for qualifying for the National Singles Championships in 2015 The APA National Singles Championshipsfrom the Fall Regional Tournament held at the Hungry Stick on October 4th. These players had to get past tough competition from all over Southern California to earn their chance to win thousands at Nationals in April. Great job, all of you!

You can still add players to your roster at this time, but any added players must pay their membership fees the night they are added to the team. Membership fees are $25.00 for anyone adding at this time, but they will have a prorated renewal fee in January of $15.00 for the entire 2015 season instead of $25.00. Any added players that play and we do not receive their membership fees on the night they play will have their fees paid by the league office and the team will become past due for those fees. In other words, collect their membership fees before you play them. Those new members can pay their membership fees online, but it needs to be paid before we process score sheets to go out the next week.

Our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Sal Vasquez, as he passed away this week. Sal was a long time APA member in the South Bay area, playing on both 8 Ball and 9 Ball teams since 2007, and most recently on Thursday night 8 Ball team Yo Merito. Sal had 315 matches played in our league and died too young at age 58. He will be missed.

Southwest Challenge teams: Be sure to get checked into your rooms before midnight on the night your team is supposed to check in. If you are going to be later than that, please contact the Riviera to hold your room for you. Thursday night should feature some mini tournaments and practice. Tables are open for the entire event, so feel free to practice as much as you want. There will be a bar in the tournament room for this event for most of the hours that the big tournament is in session, so please take advantage of this. If the bar isn’t busy enough, the Riviera may not extend us this option in the future. The Riviera has adjusted their drink prices to make it a better value for everyone. Be sure to bring your skill level certification form and have it filled out by all of your team members ahead of time so that you won’t have any delays in registering your team. Registration begins on Thursday night, generally around 6pm in the tournament room. Have a great time and come on up and say hi at the main tournament desk. J

For those of you out there using the mail system, but placing your envelope in one of the in house envelopes for return: please use an envelope that doesn’t have postage paid when you do this. We pay for your postage and not using it is a tremendous waste of our resources. Once you seal that postage paid envelope or write on it, it is no longer usable. If you are going to use it and seal it, then you might as well just mail it. Thanks!

Shoot Pool Good!
