Captain’s Log, March 6th, 2014

We’ve wrapped up a few tournaments over the last few weeks and congratulations are in order. The Bonnie and Clyde Tournament had 64 teams from all over San Diego County playing handicap races in an alternating shot format. $3200.00 was the total payout and scoring the biggest piece of that prize was Michelle Vermillion/Clint Palaci and Mary Anne Flanagan/Jonathon Mitzel, who split first and second prize money for a total of $500.00 each. Michelle and Clint won the single game played to determine this year’s champion. Billie Jo Smith/Gilbert Rosales and Marlene Angeles/Salvador Laguna tied for 3rd and pocketed $320.00. 24 teams ended up winning money and the tournament was great fun for everyone that participated. The results of the tournament are posted to the web site.

The APA National Singles ChampionshipsSan Diego hosted a Spring Regional Tournament at the Hungry Stick over the first weekend of March and we qualified 7 more players for the APA Singles National Championships in Las Vegas. The skill level 4 tier in 8 Ball was won by Joseph Hampton. The skill level 5 tier winner in 8 Ball was Marakai Fellows. The skill level 6 winner in 8 Ball was Mikey Wilborn. The skill level 7 winner in 8 Ball was Paul Langley. In 9 Ball, the 1-3 tier was won by Jackie Lisle. The skill level 4-5 tier was won by Cameron Fritzsche (South Orange County). The skill level 6-9 winner in 9 Ball was Paul Langley. Congrats to all of the winners and good luck in Las Vegas. This group will be joined up with the San Diego APA Fall Regional 8 Ball qualifiers Brett Wilson (2-3) and Cindy Birse (skill level 4) and 9 Ball qualifiers Paula Englund (1-3) and Steven Lewis (4-5). Thanks once again to the Hungry Stick for hosting these qualifying tournaments!

The next event is the APA Southwest Challenge at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Thursday divisions will be off on March 20th due to the significant number of players competing in this tournament once again. If you are participating in this event, we will be sending out your team certification forms next week and those DO NOT GET SENT BACK TO THE LEAGUE OFFICE. Take them with you to the event and turn them in when you register your team into the tournament. The rooms are all booked for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights unless you specified otherwise. You need to check into your room before midnight on the night you are scheduled to arrive. Registration for the tournament usually starts at around 6pm on Thursday. The tournament starts first thing Friday morning and should finish on Saturday night. Drive safely and we will see you there. Approximately 180 APA teams from Southern California, Nevada and Arizona will be competing in this event.

Bonus points are not automatically awarded each week. They are earned. To earn them, your score sheet must be in the league office before we mail out score sheets for the next week of play. All fees owed must be paid. The score sheet must be completely filled out and legible, with accurate player names, membership numbers, innings, defense and scores. Return envelopes must have the 5 digit team number written in the return address section of your envelope. If you meet all of these requirements, you will receive your bonus points. We award 2 points each week of play in 8 Ball and 10 points each week in 9 Ball. Lost bonus points cannot be awarded back unless there is a League Office error. Timely return of the score sheets is an absolute must if we are to properly administer the handicap system. If we only have one score sheet to score a match, that’s the one we have to use. If yours isn’t here for us to compare the sheets, we can’t administer the league the way it was meant to be administered. The best way to input scores is to have both sheets in front of us to compare them for inaccuracies. If you send yours in late, it’s as if you might as well not have even bothered scoring the match all night, because everything you wrote will not have been factored into the input. We cannot score what we do not have. Teams that aren’t getting their bonus points each week because their score sheets are late or they are past due should consider finding someone else on the team to take care of this, as lost bonus points can cost the team a chance to make playoffs. Bounced checks can also cost the team bonus points, as the returned check will result in a past due for the team. We would like nothing more than to award every team their bonus points each week, but we cannot just hand them out if we are required to do extra work or work without all of the necessary documents. We thank you for your understanding and your attention to this matter.

The San Diego APA is sad to announce the passing of Keven “Bones” Evans. He lost his fight with cancer on January 11th. He played 8 Ball in East County with Ginger Beedie and Mike Asher’s Wednesday team “Mike’s Militia”. He was 56. The SDAPA also is sad to announce the passing of Jim “Jimbo” Waters. Jim had played APA off and on since 1998, mostly in the Lemon Grove area. Jim was 58. We send our condolences to the friends and family of both of these gentlemen.
