Captain’s Log, August 4th, 2013

This is the final week of the Summer Session. Some teams will be advancing to the Session Ending Playoffs starting next week and some teams will get a few weeks off. It is extremely important that you get your score sheets turned in on time. The wild card draw will take place on the following dates (playoff schedules will be updated on the web site):

Sunday and Monday Divisions- Thursday, August 8th

Tuesday Divisions- Friday, August 9th

Wednesday and Thursday Divisions- August 12th

To be eligible for the wild card, you cannot be behind in fees and you cannot have more than 5 forfeits for the session. Division playoff sizes are broken down in the SDAPA bylaws. If you have questions about playoffs or tiebreakers, please contact the league office AFTER the dates listed above for your respective divisions. In the event of ties, we use the tiebreaking procedures outlined in the APA team manual to break ties. We also have more tiebreaking procedures listed in the SDAPA bylaws.

MVP, Perfect Session and patch list final results will be posted to the Awards and Milestones link after August 12th. All results from the regular session for all divisions must be processed before we can begin the MVP calculating process.

We have been noticing that teams are not marking forfeits properly in 8 Ball. During regular session, individual forfeits are worth 2 points. During playoffs, individual forfeits are worth 3 points.

Playoff teams need to pay close attention to the playoff schedule. Week 1 of playoffs starts on the week of August 11th. Then we skip a week for the APA National Team Championships and Week 2 starts on the week of August 25th. To be eligible to compete in playoffs, players must have a minimum of 4 matches with the team that session and to compete in the Blast, you must have 4 matches with the team that session and 6 lifetime matches in that format by the end of the Summer Session, which includes playoffs.

The APA National Team ChampionshipsThe APA National Team Championships begin on August 15th and goes through August 24th. The event is taking place at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. San Diego has 4 9 Ball teams, 5 Open 8 Ball teams and 1 Ladies 8 Ball team competing in the National Team Championships. www.poolplayers.com is where all of the National Team Championship information can be found if you want to keep track of your friends competing in the event. We also have 3 Scotch Doubles teams and 3 Masters teams competing in Championship tournaments during this event. Any current APA member in good standing with the league with an established skill level can sign up and compete in mini tournaments at the National event, so even if your team didn’t make it this time, there is plenty to do and see if you have some free time for a trip to Vegas. I highly recommend it. We will be posting more about the National events and the teams competing on the message board of our web site and on Facebook.

The Fall Session begins on the week of September 3rd. Sunday and Monday teams won’t be playing that week as we observe Labor Day. If you haven’t registered your team for the Fall Session yet, please notify us of your intentions as soon as possible. For those of you that didn’t make playoffs this time, enjoy your time off and we hope to see you for the Fall Session. Playoff teams will be receiving a Playoff Captain’s Log with your first week playoff score sheets, which will apply to both weeks of playoffs. The Fall Session Blast is scheduled for October 12-13.

We are bringing back the annual Team Captains Tournament, which will take place on September 14th at the Hungry Stick. To be eligible to compete in the Team Captains Tournament, you must be a captain of an SDAPA Fall Session 8 Ball, 9 Ball or Ladies team. This tournament will offer added money and prizes. Watch for a flyer with all of the details in the first week of Fall Session team packets.

Our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Jason Mark, who passed away on July 21st. Mark was a brand new APA member, playing only three 9 Ball matches for team “Sloppy Joe’s” out of Pal Joey’s in Allied Gardens. Jason was 43 years old.
