Captain’s Log, July 6th, 2013

We hope everyone enjoyed their time off for the 4th of July. The ladies divisions kicked off a few weeks back and we have 19 Ladies teams spread out over two different divisions. Many of those teams are still looking to fill out their rosters if anyone is interested. If you are female and are interested in playing, please contact the league office.

The window to qualify for the Fall Single’s Regional closed on June 15th. The Regional is scheduled to be played here in San Diego on the first weekend of October. Players that are qualified to compete in the Regional must stay active on a team in the format(s) they qualified in.

Past due fees hurt a team’s chances of making the playoffs. We do not award bonus points to teams that don’t turn their stuff in on time or are short on the fees owed. Teams on the mail system are required to mail their score sheet the day following the league match. Timely submission of score sheets allows us to get stats posted to the web site that are not only accurate, but up to date. Mailing your score sheet late disrupts the necessary steps to properly administrate the league, and those teams that we do not receive score sheets on time will not receive bonus points. Teams that submit checks that we cannot cash are subject to $15 administration fees each time the check does not clear. We will submit checks through the bank a second time for non-regular offenders. Bonus points that can be earned each week are 10 points for 9 Ball and 2 points for 8 Ball. Over a regular length session, not getting any bonus points for always being late with paperwork can cost a team 20 or more points in 8 Ball and 100 or more points in 9 Ball. Teams that are consistently late with fees typically do not make the playoffs. Teams that are past due when it comes time to do the wild card draw are not included in the draw. Bonus points are not exclusive to just past due fees. You can also lose bonus points by not properly keeping score or not printing legibly.

Please include your 5 digit team number on the return envelope!

Keeping score properly is what helps us create the most accurate skill level possible for each player competing in our league. Marking the proper amount of innings and marking each defensive shot as they happen is how we make that happen. The definition of a defensive shot (aka safety or non-performance shot) in its most simplest form is “no intent to make a ball”. After each shot, if you ask yourself whether the player had intentions of making a ball, it becomes pretty easy to learn the proper way to mark a defensive shot. While it would be great if every player announced their safeties as they play each one, it’s ultimately the responsibility of the player keeping score (or someone helping the score keeper) to pay attention to each shot and watch for safeties. It is not acceptable to copy the other team’s safeties or to let the other team copy your safeties. We can’t know who is not marking them properly if you let them copy at the end of the match. Also, innings and defense do not necessarily need to match between the two score sheets. Do not let the other scorekeeper try to pad innings by telling you there were more than you believe there were. If you think you missed one, that’s one thing. If you are having someone keep score on your team, PLEASE make sure they know how to keep score properly.

The APA Masters ChampionshipWe ended up getting a 3rd Masters slot for the August APA Masters National Team Championship. The Hurricanes won the division and earned a slot into the tournament. The Hurricanes for Nationals are Paul Langley, Tony Witty, John Pasquarella and Mike DeFino. We had an incredibly close battle for 2nd place that went to Hearth House in La Mesa and 3rd was Pool Synergy out of Encinitas. Congrats on another fun Masters Session. We are currently on break and expected to start back up again in September. Thanks to all of the teams that participated in this past session. Good luck to the 3 teams competing at Nationals in August. Some of the Hurricane’s team members were on the team that won the Masters Championships in Las Vegas in 2002. A list of all of the San Diego APA preregistered tournament teams will be posted on our web site message board a week or two before the National event.

Several of our members have reported to us that they have not received their membership packets. It is important to us and to the APA National Office that you receive your packet. If you have not received your membership packet yet, and it’s been at least 8 weeks since you paid your membership fees, please contact the league office. If you have not filled out an application, either through your team packet or online membership, you absolutely will not be getting it. These things get mailed from a mail house as it is ordered through the APA National Office. No address on file means no membership packet. Bad address info also does not work. Membership packets do not get forwarded, but rather sent back to the APA National Office.

The APA National Team ChampionshipsDo you have vacation time to kill this summer? The APA National Team Championships in Las Vegas is a great way to spend a week out of your year, especially if you have never been there. There is something to do out there for all of our league members, whether you qualified on a team or are just out there hanging out. It’s an amazing event and takes place over 12 days from August 14 through the 24th.

Have a great week and…..
