Welcome to the start of the Summer Session. The Summer session begins a new APA calendar year to qualify for the 2014 National Team Championships. 8 Ball Divisions will be starting the new 3 point scoring system this week. The flyer on the back is a reminder of how the new scoring system works, and the score sheets have a section to document the final score of each match, taking the place of the old win/loss column on the far right. Also on the score sheet in the upper right hand corner is a scoring chart for reference. Several APA leagues throughout the country have been test marketing this program for quite some time, and they all seem to really enjoy the new scoring system, and we hope you like it, too. There is nothing different about skill levels or the race chart for skill level matchups, just the amount of points each team can earn in an individual match and the overall team match score. Byes are worth 8 points, individual forfeits are 2 points during regular session matches and weekly bonus points will now be worth 2 points instead of 1. With this new scoring system, it is possible to lose 3 matches, but accumulate the most team points to win the match. This will be important to know going into the playoffs. With a maximum of 15 points available, reaching 8 points is a guaranteed win. The Blast takes place this coming weekend, May 18-19 at the Hungry Stick. 8 Ball is on Saturday and 9 Ball is on Sunday. The Blast schedule should be posted on Saturday, May 11th, and rosters should be posted by Wednesday, May 15th on our web site at sandiego.apaleagues.com. Teams competing in the Blast will receive their team trophies at the Blast. Teams that won standings or playoffs this session that were already qualified for City Championships and re-qualified or auto-advanced directly to the City Championships will receive their trophies on the weekend of the City Championships your team will be competing. Patches, MVP’s and Perfect Session trophies will be available at the Blast and City Championships for all players who earned them. Many teams are advancing to the Blast as the highest finishing playoff team that wasn’t already qualified. Please check the web site or call the league office if you need assistance in finding out if your team still has a chance to qualify for the City Championships. We always qualify at least one new team from each division, each session, for the Blast. Prize money checks for the Spring Session were mailed out with the first week score sheets for the teams that earned them. Unless you specify to us that the check should be made out to someone else, we always mail these out to the team captain. Teams that won their division standings also can request a bar sponsor plaque. Please request this as soon as possible. Only those who request them will receive them. The 9 Ball City Championships are June 1-2. The Ladies 8 Ball City Championships are May 31 and June 2nd. The 8 Ball City Championships are June 8-9. All City Championship events will take place at the Hungry Stick. Schedules and rosters for these events will be posted to the web site shortly after the Spring Blast is complete. The City Championships will feature 2013 SDAPA City Championship t-shirts. We have a limited supply of reasonably priced ladies and men’s t-shirts and tank tops, so be sure to get yours early. Dave Whitsell will be on hand for the Blast and City Championships for all of your cue repair and supply needs. Right before the big tournaments is a great time to get that tip shaped or replaced and all the dings taken out of your shaft. With every new session is a new batch of new players to the APA. I’d like to remind every team captain that you are responsible for adding these new players at a skill level that reflects their true ability. If they lose their first week and drop to a lower level and you know they are better than that, it is your responsibility to raise them and play them at something that more closely resembles their true ability. And it’s absolutely within reason to raise your own player right in the middle of the match if they are displaying abilities you had no idea they possessed. The team you are playing against will appreciate you for doing what’s right. Teams that neglect this responsibility may be penalized. You can still add players after week 4, but they must pay their membership fees before they play. Schedules might change some in the first few weeks. We try to accommodate teams that are still trying to get organized. If you have a bye this first week, it’s a good idea to organize a team practice on your night of play, that way you are ready to play on a moment’s notice if we fill the bye. It’s always easiest to get together that first night than it is to try to organize a makeup at a later date. Please take the time to help our new teams and league members get comfortably acclimated to our pool league. Helping them to keep score properly and understand all of the rules will make their first experience more pleasant and create a long lasting friendship. While pool leagues are meant to be competitive, it’s supposed to be a fun competition. Courtesy and respect is an absolute must. Welcome back, good luck and……. Shoot Pool Good!
