Captain’s Log, May 13th, 2012

Welcome to the start of the Summer Session! The Summer Session begins Crazy Busy Fun Time! Fasten your seatbelts, it could be a pretty wild ride! The Summer Session begins a new APA calendar year. However, there is plenty of business left to finish out the previous year, and it starts this coming weekend with the Spring Session Blast at the Hungry Stick. 8 Ball teams play on Saturday and 9 Ball teams play on Sunday. The Blast schedule should be completely posted by Sunday evening, May 13th. The Spring Blast is the final qualifier for the 2012 City Championships. The City Championships will take place on the weekend of June 1-3 for 9 Ball and Ladies Only 8 Ball divisions and June 9-10 for Open 8 Ball Divisions. We will be advancing 6 teams to Nationals in 8 Ball, 4 teams in 9 Ball and 1 Ladies team. We will also be qualifying at least 2 Masters teams as we were just offered up an extra slot. We also have 1 9 Ball Doubles Championship slot and 2 8 Ball Doubles Championship slots which are pre-registered, sign up only tournaments. We will draw for these slots on the weekend of the 8 Ball City Championships.

We will have City Championship T-Shirts on hand once again at the City Championships. They are only available on the two City Championship weekends, so get them before they are gone. We started doing these shirts because everybody wanted them, but we lost more than $1200 last year because nobody bought them. To avoid that problem this year, we drastically reduced how many we are making, and if we lose money on them again this time, we will stop doing the shirts entirely. With that in mind, if you want one, you should get them before they are gone. We are still keeping them cheap as usual, and we do have previous year City Championship shirts on hand as well.

We have plenty of exciting things in store for the 2012 APA league year, and now that we have gotten past many of the speed bumps the new web site provided us last year, we hope that it has become the extension of our pool league that you hoped it would be. Anyone still having trouble accessing the site and navigating to everything the site has to offer, please call the office. We are here to help.

Membership applications
have been provided in your weekly envelopes this week for any new players you are adding to your team. Please have them submitted back as they fill them out. Membership fees for any new players must be paid no later than the 4th week if you would like that player to remain on the roster.

We have moved a few teams around to different divisions to shake things up a little bit. If you have an issue with any change, please contact the league office to discuss. Some shake ups are only temporary while others could be viewed as a positive for everyone involved. There are also some new teams out there, so please be helpful and make their first week enjoyable by showing them how everything works.

Team prize money checks are being distributed this week to all teams except the Ladies teams. Ladies will receive theirs on Friday night at the first night of City Championships. Trophies will be available at the Blast for teams COMPETING in the Blast. Teams advancing directly to the City Championships will get their trophies on the weekend they play in the City Championships. Standings winners from the Spring Session can have a Sponsor plaque made for their team, but they must order it through the league office. The sooner you call, the better the chance we can have them done for the Blast or City Championships.
PatchesMVP trophies and other awards will be available at the Blast and both City Championship weekends. We also have a brand new version of the APA manual that we will start distributing on these weekends as well. The Mandatory Captain’s Meeting will take place on June 30th at the Hungry Stick. More details will be provided as we get closer to that date.

The APA National Team ChampionshipsSince things get a little bit crazy between now and City Championships, the entire league office would like to wish all 135 teams competing the 2012 San Diego APA City Championships the best of luck in winning a trip to Vegas to compete in the APA National Team Championships.

I’ll leave you all with this funny story. Twice recently, the league office has been accused of purposely sabotaging certain league areas with board placement for City Championships. What’s funny about that is the City Championship draw takes place IN PUBLIC with several people all assisting with the draw. Once again, when the Blast event is over this coming Sunday, we will conduct the City Championship draw at the Hungry Stick.
ALL ARE WELCOME TO BE THERE as usual, and we welcome the use of picture phones to provide further proof that it is simply luck of the draw as to who is drawn onto what board. We used to do every draw publicly until people stopped showing up for them entirely. We honestly do not care who goes to Nationals, provided they made it fairly and with skill levels that reflect their true abilities.
